Step 1: Confirm Vehicle Eligibility

Before exporting a vehicle, it’s crucial to confirm that it meets the destination country’s regulations. Different countries have varying requirements regarding emissions, safety standards, lighting systems, and drive orientation (right-hand vs. left-hand drive).

Some nations, such as Australia and Japan, impose strict import restrictions on used vehicles, while others like the UAE and certain African countries are more flexible. Our team ensures every vehicle we export complies with relevant laws to avoid customs delays or refusals on arrival.

Step 2: Prepare the Documentation

Exporting a vehicle from the UK involves specific paperwork. At minimum, you’ll need:

  • The V5C logbook (registration certificate): The registered keeper must notify the DVLA of the permanent export.

  • A completed V5C/4 form: This section of the logbook is sent to DVLA, while the rest goes with the vehicle.

  • A Bill of Sale or commercial invoice for proof of ownership and declared value.

  • Export Certificate or EORI number (if you’re a business) to comply with customs.

Pegasus Auto House assists with all documentation to ensure compliance and clarity for both seller and buyer.

Step 3: Choose the Right Export Method

You have several transport options when exporting a vehicle internationally:

  • Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo): The vehicle is driven onto a ship and secured. Suitable for standard vehicles but exposes the car to weather and handling.

  • Enclosed Container Shipping: Ideal for luxury or classic cars, this method provides maximum protection during transit.

  • Air Freight: The fastest and most secure (but also the most expensive) way to transport high-value vehicles.

We typically recommend enclosed containers for our clients, especially for supercars, rare collector vehicles, or vehicles with sensitive finishes.

Step 4: Vehicle Preparation

Before shipping, your vehicle must be prepared for the journey. This includes:

  • Fully documenting the car’s condition (photos + inspection)

  • Draining fuel to required levels

  • Disconnecting alarms or electronics if necessary

  • Applying protective coverings or custom wrapping

We also offer pre-export detailing and mechanical checks, ensuring the vehicle arrives in top condition.

Step 5: Arrival, Duties & Registration in Destination Country

Once the vehicle reaches its destination, the buyer must pay any applicable import duties, VAT, and registration fees. These vary widely between countries. Our export team coordinates with local agents to help facilitate a smooth customs clearance and registration process.
